We’re Back!

For much of 2015 and the first part of 2016, the club has been a little dormant. However, we’re back again now, and looking again to grow and continue to talk with people in positions to help us put up more courses in the Erie area.

We get to say “more” courses now, because the Erie area now has two courses. EDGC founders played a role in helping to get the course at Penn-State Behrend set up. It’s a fair nine-hole layout, and a good start toward growing the game within the Erie area. There’s also a second course at Edinboro University.

We have a few irons in the fire right now.

  • Continue to check our Facebook page for the latest news (smaller things than we’ll post here will go there).
  • We’re looking for venues to host a winter putting league starting in January to tide us over until we can get out in the spring…
  • … when we hope to have spring-summer-fall league at the Behrend course on a weeknight or two each week.
  • And of course, we’re still in contact with local committees and organizations on building more disc golf courses here locally.

If you’re interested in helping out, please get in touch with us! Email me and I’ll get back to you within a few days.

We’ve Got Our First Logo!

Over the Thanksgiving break, we spent some time working on a logo for the Erie Disc Golf Club. It’s shown here in the Black and White version. Let us know what you think!

Previous (attempted) designs included the Flagship Niagara, the Bicentennial Tower, and a map or outline of either Presque Isle or Erie County itself. This version includes all vector artwork so it can be scaled pretty well (including the basket).

This version should scale well, and there are plenty of areas that can be colorized should we ever feel the need.

What do you think?

Lake Erie Community Park

On Tuesday, James Bock and I ventured to the township meeting in Girard to introduce the Supervisors to the possibility of working with us to install a disc golf course on the soon-to-be-renovated Lake Erie Community Park property:

We identified, with the Supervisors, areas that may be suitable, and they seem amenable to helping to clear some of the lower brush and smaller trees. They asked good questions, and we provided them with a USB drive, a recent issue of DiscGolfer Magazine, and some printouts. We’ll touch base with them in a week or two and continue forward, but we’re encouraged that they are open to the idea and possibilities that disc golf can bring to their beautiful park.

North East Township Meeting

We met last night with North East Township at their monthly meeting. Representing Erie Disc Golf Club were Erik J. Barzeski, Brandon Smith, Mike Mirth, and Pittsburgh-born Jay. We felt that the meeting went as well as it could have gone, and we look forward to answering any questions from the board in the coming weeks, and hopefully to fundraising and installation of Erie county’s first disc golf course in North East, PA!

North East 20-Mile Creek Park Photos

NEDGC LayoutBrandon and I (Erik) re-visited our “concept course” in North East at 20-Mile Park (“North East Township Community Conservation Park” or “NETCCP”).

We took a measuring wheel, made a few changes to the locations of a few baskets and tees to eliminate any safety concerns we could foresee, and played each hole several times to a portable basket.

You can click the image to the right to see a larger image (or click here). The course in its current version is:

Hole 1 - Par 3 - 340 feet
Hole 2 - Par 3 - 285 feet
Hole 3 - Par 3 - 295 feet
Hole 4 - Par 3 - 350 feet
Hole 5 - Par 3 - 315 feet
Hole 6 - Par 3 - 245 feet
Hole 7 - Par 3 - 340 feet
Hole 8 - Par 3 - 240 feet
Hole 9 - Par 4 - 470 feet
Total: Par 28 - 2540 feet

A “tour” of the course follows. Click on the “tee pad perspective” shots for a larger view of the image. Continue reading

Scouted out a Course in North East

Below, you’ll find a possible layout for what may become the first public disc golf course in Erie County. Brandon and I walked the course in the miserable Hurricane Sandy weather on Saturday, October 27 and we think this design is quite nice. The park is a great spot and is already maintained (mowed), but currently only tends to attract fishermen parking and the occasional walker. The layout has holes that go both left and right, some tighter holes and some more open holes, and a reasonable variety of distances.

Next we will meet with the North East Township Parks & Recreation committee. All we’ll need to start is ten baskets and some tee signs, then we can work on putting up a little welcome board and then some cement teepads.

Check out our Facebook post on this as well.
